XDM Tourture Test
Yesterday I posted about Springfield Armory’s new XDm. Today I put it through the ringer. The torture tested XD(m) performed perfectly. I ran 200 rounds through it in about 5 minutes.
The only problem with the pistol’s performance was due to ammo. A reloaders nightmare happened not only 1 time but 3 times within a few minutes of each other. The reloaded ammo did not have powder or had bad powder when the round fired. The fast burnrate primers forced the bullet into the barrel. Since I know the reloader, me, I want give them too much grief.
The near 250 rounds I ran through Springfield Armory’s new polymer pistol were on target from about 5 yards away. I still have not done a complete test. I If you have any specific test that you would like to know about don’t hesitate to contact me. I will do the the test within reason. (ie. running over the XDM with a truck is not an option).

Your torture test seem to help my impression of the XDM, but i still have a concern about the barrel. with it being a match grade barrel i feel it will be picky about the ammo it will accept, meaning it may jam alot if using the cheap bulk ammo. this is my concern because i do not compete and would simply use this gun for range practice/fun with cheap ammo, and have some nice JHP ammo for home defence. what is your view on the barrel. since you say you use your own reloads, i have no idea how it compares to the cheap stuff, i assume it would be better. if you could give me your opinion, or run the gun through some cheap ammo like Wolf or the remanufacture bulk like on cabela’s sight, it would be great info to know. this is mainly my concern with deciding on the XDM, which im in love with, or the normal XD 40.
Thanks,
Chris R.
Christopher, I have run what some would call “cheap ammo” (Winchester White Box target pack) through it. I must confess I try and only buy American Made Ammo. I guess you could call me a raging hypocritical liberal. That being said I run a Croatian Made pistol. Wolf ammo if I remember correctly comes from the same part of the globe (old Soviet Union). Because it comes from that part of the world i don’t see a problem.
Because it is an XD and only comes with the upgraded match barrel would really not make any difference. It is still a mass produced weapon that follows specs of any .40 S&W chamber. I load all of my .40 rounds with low to medium load of powder, under the max case lengeth, and seat Montana Gold 180gr JHP, and a CCI primer. I use either Power Pistol or Tite Group powder. That being said I run standard stuff. I am not hunting or shooting for precise shots. I am looking for a shot the gets the job done in multiple uses. Basically I am looking for a round that is cheap, fires reliably, loads into any 40. Don’t think because these are custom loads that they are. They are not. Infact I would call my loads less reliable than the cheap stuff. I do take pride in my work. Safety and security in knowing the round will go off and fire with doing harm to those on the other end of the high quality barrel. If you have any specific rounds in mind I wouldn’t mind video taping and sending them to you if you provide the ammo.
Or if you would like to shoot mine with what ever ammo you would like I am game for that also. I am available most days to meet at my range in Birmingham, AL or the middle of next week in Orlando, FL.
E-mail me and we can work something out. Buying somebody ammo that you can’t test yourself sounds nuts. Let me know what you think?
As far as your concern. You have nothing to worry about. I have a feeling that what ever you put in will fire. I had a couple problems that were my fault. But other than that I have had none. I haven’t looked at the chanber specs but I imgaine they are just like any XD.
What other questions do you have. Investing in an XDM is going to be well worth your investment. Since the torture test almost a month ago I have not cleaned it. I bet there have been nearly 2,500 rounds through it. Going for another 100-200 tomorrow and don’t plan to clean either. But I do have a match this weekend and will do a full clean and test fire before. So when all is said and done I will have 2,600+ rounds through it before cleaning without a single problem. So of my weapons my XDM is becoming my favorite. I don’t recommend running any weapon that long without a little oil.
[...] some great weapons out there in that range. The XDM would not be one. I love my XD(M) and have run it through the rinnger. But anything over $650 I would maybe take a look at the lesser Glocks. Yes I favor the [...]
The best bang for the buck ammo (40sw) is Winchester 40 S&W 165gr fmj Target/ Range available at Walmart… $28.96 for 100 rounds. Consistent quality and easy on the budget. I have personally fired 1,500+ rounds of this ammo through my XDm, without one single malfunction. Amazingly the same type of ammo in .45 Auto is only $29.86 for 100 rounds. Bring on the XDm .45!!! The XDm .40 was my first semi-auto handgun purchase. I am in love, and highly anticipating the arrival of the XDm .45

I am interested in picking up one of these weapons. I have done what research I can find online, from what I have read, reliability seems pretty good, feed and ejection dosen’t seem to be an issue, but, a few things I don’t seem to be hearing a lot about are accuracy at 25 yards, and how well it carries for a daily carry weapon, ( proper permit carry )
Can someone shead a little light on these issues please.
While both subjects interest me, I am more concerned with shot placement and how well this weapon will group the rounds, (if the shooter can do their part) because, lets face it, the number of rounds a magazine holds is one thing, but, real life isn’t like TV, if the weapon can’t place 2 or more rounds VERY close together then it is not a safe weapon to carry or depend on.
Thanks for the test, I would like to see a more extensive torture test done, degreased and fired till failure. But, I can’t blame you for not wanting to do that, go knows I wouldn’t.
XD40 Prices,
Try going to a gun-show, you can find one near you at http://www.gunshows-usa.com. My dad just bought an XDm-9 for only $610 including tax at a gun-show when every store we went to had them priced between $600-$700.
Today I shot Blazer 180 gr FMJ, it’s the cheapest ammo you can get at walmart 12.47 for 50, and it jamed, I gat realy pissed about it, I hate when you can’t trust the gun, it should shoot nomatter what kind of ammo you put in it.
Then I spoke to my friend who got 2 XDMs and the same thing happend to his XDMs. I also have a Glock 22 and that is the gun that I carry around, I hate unreliable guns
