Springfield XDM .40 S&W

Have you heard about the new Springfield Armory XDM?   I hadn’t until I bought one.   I typically stay up with the XD Talk.   I have liked the XD ever since I first got my hands on one.   It is much like the Glock – but better, of course that depends on who you ask.   I will save the XD vs. Glock discussion for later. 9/16/08 That later has come with a comparrison of the XDM vs. Glock 22 &   23.

Springfield’s XDM!

springfield xdm photo

The XDM is built on the XD platform, or the HS Produkt HS-2000 in Croatia, and currently available in the 40 S&W and 9mm.   It has a 4.5″ barrel similar to the XD Tactical.   The main Difference between the XD Tactical and the XDM is the grip.   The XDM comes with interchangeable grips to adjust for the shooters preferred grip size.   It is a little bit wider than the previous XD-40’s,   not sure – but it seems to be.   It comes standard in Alabama with two 16 round high capacity magazines,   all the normal XD gear Holster, speed loader, magazine pouch, and an allen/hex key.   One thing I did not expect was the new larger case.   The case it comes in looks a lot more industrial than previous versions and isn’t crowded for room.

XDM Case Outside

Trigger travel is by far the shortest of any polymer pistol I have handled. Springfield even brags about it in the XD(m) marketing material.   The barrel is match grade with a fully supported chamber – Something Glocks don’t have.   It has an ambidextrous magazine release that is longer on either side than the standard XD release.   The assembly is easier over previous XD versions without having to pull the trigger during breakdown and field stripping.

It comes standard with a 3 dot steel sights and can be changed.   It has all the standard safety features like a trigger safety and grip safety. It weights in dry with an empty magazine with a forged steel slide at 2lbs.   The trigger pull seems to be around 5lbs untested.

Pros and Cons

Pro: This seems to be Springfield’s attempt at producing a match ready production pistol, hence the “M Factor” in my view.   Though polymer pistols have not truly cleared the path in match play this weapon has the potential to really make a name for itself straight out of the box.

Pro and Con: Having a removable grip means one more area to clean, break, and maintain.   Instead of making different fixed grips with the weapon they decided to include three different removable parts in the case.   Now granted this is nice and helps increase stock and availability, unlike Sig’s Attempt at the form fitting grips.

Con (personal Opinion): As a standard XD comes with a chambered warning.   The way it sticks out from the slide it looks as though it can be worn,   broken, and plus it will wear your holster too.

Springfield XDM Locked and Loaded

I always know if my pistol is locked and loaded.   This indicator shows everyone else your pistol is cocked and locked.   The warning system is great if you let people, specifically children, play with your gun loaded or leave it laying around.   That is sarcasm if you didn’t catch it.   If you let others handle your weapon locked and loaded, hand it to them, or don’t even open it for visual inspection before you share it you may not need to own a handgun.   <-That is just a gun safety pet peeve. –<

This isn’t a necessary safety precaution and may cause more harm than it is worth for me.

Other review factors:

The price will come down.

Currently only a .40 S&W is available. Different Varieties are sure to follow Update 11/10/08 : The XDM 9mm is available

Since the weapon is so new not many accessories have yet to hit the market. So far I have not found an interchangeable part with the standard XD.

Conclusion and Overall First Impression

If me making the purchase isn’t indication enough – this weapon is well worth the investment and fires like a dream.   If you can get your hands on one you will not be disappointed.   Go out and get one today.   Don’t buy one on GunBroker.com there buy it now prices are way too high.   I bought mine for less than $550.

Picked up a gun mag and it had test of the XDm, I thought at first I needed a gun like that as a newbie. Set it aside for 6 months and got a threatening call to my wife this morning. Not the best way to start off a new year but realized I am going to get a gun for home defense. Read your review and realized this is probably the best choice for a beginner.
    Thanks for the review,

My disappointment comes with the grip. I use the large grip in the palm and need side grips to fill hand. also I like crimsons laser grip but they don’t make it to fit the xdm due to the different size palm grips. I do like the gun itseld and wish it came with adjustable sights. Different palm grips can reduce recoil if made of quality material for absobsion.

i have bought a XDM 9mm back last summer of 2009 and i love it. But I have a question about it that i can’t figure out is when i put a full clip in it and just kind of shake it some like in a running motion it rattles but it will not do it with out the clip. So could one of you tell me what would cause that.

    @Pat
Sounds like your buddy was using some shitty bullets if they were not ejecting properly. I owned a glock 22 for a while and was not impressed by anything it had to offer. Awkward slide to grip angle, wide boxy slide, has some kind of hexagonal rifling in the barrel that claims to increase accuracy and barrel life. ( what a joke on the accuracy part, and as for long life well needless to say it was only around for about 1200 rounds before I traded for the xdm and compared to the match barrel of the xdm at 1200 rounds there was no measurable difference in rifling wear.) The glock also seemed to have a problem with hitting to the left at any reasonable distance but its not that it matters because I couldnt hit a damn thing at over 15 yards with the glock anways. Glock actually had me skeptical about buying an xdm because of the fact that they are polymer guns with a hammerless design and are somewhat similar in design and function. But after I bought the xdm and fired it for the first time my mind was instantly changed. First off the slide to grip angle seemed to be very similar to that of a 1911 which has my favorite ergonomics out of most handguns ive fired. Seems to point where the bullet is going to go and the same goes for the xd. The biggest difference in the two is the accuracy. The glock simply does not even compare to the xdm in overall accuracy. Second biggest difference is the trigger pull. The glock trigger seemed to travel forever before it actually fired and almost a full trigger release was needed to fire the next shot. The xdm trigger on the other hand seemed much better. Much less travel before the break and the trigger only has to be released slightly before another shot can be fired which increased accuracy over the glock requiring less overall movement for a follow up shot thus increasing rapid fire accuracy. The slide of the xd is much smaller than the glock increasing target visibility while aiming down the barrel. The glock has a very squared slide which in my opinion makes the gun look cheap and almost strange looking or ugly you could say. The xdm has a trapazoid shape to it similar to a HK USP thus making see less of the slide and more of the target. The xd also feels good in your hand regardless of hand size thanks to the back straps being adjustable. For those of you that think this makes it “weak” or easy to break well I encourage you to try because that damn thing just aint going anywhere regardless of what you throw at it. Your more likely to break the whole handle off before to break the backstrap or the holding pin falls out. All in all I would recommend the xdm over any model of glock and this ^^^ is only a few of the reasons why. If your looking for a decently priced polymer handgun I advise you to not waste money on a glock. They are not the gun all the hype has made them out to be. After owning my xd 40 for two years now and firing at least 6000 to 7000 rounds through it im happy to say it still fires and retains its accuracy as if it were in its first 1000 rounds. XD has made a believer out of me and I think its safe to say they have also made a gun that will put the glock to shame every time in ergonomics and accuracy, reliability, safety, and overall performance. XDm all the way.

I bought and XDM .40 last week after shooting a friends xd .40 and handling the xdm in the store. I put 300 rounds the first week. I haven’t owned a handgun in a few years( ast as a 1911 .45), but this thing was a dream to fire. It is very accurate. The trigger pull and reset are the best I’ve seen from a stock gun. I shot a match with it this week, and the grip is incredible. I love the firing position compared to the glock.
    2 cons:
My wife has a difficult time with the slide, and she never had that problem when dealing with 1911s.
It’s going to cost me more. It’s such a joy to shoot that I have to get equipment to reload .40!

Sounds like you are not a good shot if you couldn’t hit anything with the glock. however, I cannot say anything about the xd’s because I have never shot one. I have held one but they are very bulky. I will say they have a lot of safety features offered to the gun but that can be very dangerous to an officer as well.@t

I am looking for an xdm 9mm for around the price you stated in the write up. Any way you could point me towards that direction? And I am looking for a pistol to carry once i get my permit in a couple weeks and my step dad was telling me this would be too big to conceal and i would hate it but i dont think i want a compact pistol. Any ideas or comments are welcome from anyone. Thanks,
