Glock 22-23 vs. Springfield XDM

September 17th, 2008 Leave a comment Go to comments

As previously posted in my review of the XDM I promised a comparison of the Glock vs. XDM.

I have owned Springfield Armory’s XDM 40 S&W for a few months and pleased to announce that I am still happy with my purchase.   I view myself as a regular gun owner that enjoys pinking and pistol competition as much as the next person and not a Todd Jarret.   When I went to purchase my XDM I was doing research on 1911′s and considering an XD40.   Needless to say… buying the XDM was a bit impulsive.

So why did I buy an XD vs. Glock?

Fashion!   What?   Shooters like fashion?   “Heck Ya!”   Have you ever considered that at an IDPA competition or IPSC match the guys talking about their rigs and wearing their favorite manufacturer’s shirt was all about fashion.   If that “ain’t” fashion awareness then I might have to start reading more tabloid magazines in the grocery store check out.

I bought my XDM because fewer people have them and it makes me more original and remaining tasteful.   Had I gone with a Nickle Plated   1911 it would have been too bold of a statement for a newbie.   Although I have been in possession of firearms since I was a wee little one, noob none-the-less in the eyes of my shooting buddies.

Lets compare the the Glock 23 to the XDM.

Nobody can deny that Glock is perhaps the most popular pistol manufacture of polymer pistols.   In fact it is probably the most dominate pistol in law enforcement protecting streets today.   I have received numerous e-mails asking me to compare the Glock to the XDM.   None more pointed than my new friend Officer Relacion at Hanalei, HI Patrol Services of the Kauai, HI Police Department asked: “I live on the Island of Kauai in the state of Hawaii. I was just wondering if the 20% off is still eligible. Also whats your pros and cons for the XDM vs The GLock22 .40.”   I don’t know about the 20% off. But here are some Pros vs. Cons for the Glocks.

Lets start out by looking at the specs on the Glock 22 & 23

XDM Specs

Caliber:
.40S&W

4.5″ Steel, Melonite, Fully Supported Ramp
Trigger Pull:
5.5 – 7.7lbs.
Slide:
Forged Steel, Melonite ® Finish
Weight w/ empty mag:
32 oz.

So did you look at the specs? Besides the barrel length and weight there isn’t much difference. The XDM does come with a Match Grade barrel which is far and above Glocks Hex barrels which have been nothing but headaches for money conscious reloaders.   If you take out using lead cast bullets I can find little difference in the function of the weapons. The barrels of the three compared weapons are different lengths. The weight between the weapons is a major separator.

But what about performance. I like the sights out of the box on the XDM over the Glocks. As far a function and accuracy I can’t tell a difference. They both function well and the only accuracy difference I can tell is perhaps at 100 yds with the XDM is a little better. Shooting at 100 yds is not self defense.

In my opinion these three weapons are similar and are clearly built for different reasons. It is hard to compare them. Each weapon is a great weapon for that job. For weekend plinking the XDM is the winner and my choice for what I do. If this comparison was between an XD40 and Glock I would go with the Glock even though I own the XD40. Why? Because there have been so many Glocks sold that every gunsmith shop can fix them without sending out for work. Parts are abundant, and the price is a little lower at my store. But if cost wasn’t a factor and all three were never before seen guns without a brand name associated with it I would choose the XDM over and over again. Besides being a great weapon is just looks cool too.

What is your opinion of Glock vs. XDM or XD?

I had both XDM 9 Bi-tone and Glock 19 RTF2. Ended up keeping the Glock.

    XDM 9 Pros:
It’s a very nice looking gun.
    Steel sights and Steel Trigger.
Get mag carrier and paddle holster when gun is purchased
    Build quality fit and finish
Visible Cocked and Round in the chamber indicator

    XDM 9 Cons:
    Spongy long trigger
High bore axis (Not as ballanced as Glock19, Little more top heavy)
White dots on rear sights quicky faded (Easily fixed)
Over thousands of rounds had a total of 3 fte on 115 grn factory ammo.
Grip safety must be pressed in to rack slide

Owned the XDM 9 first and hated Glocks…….. until I bought one. Now I understand.

Reasons I chose the GLock 19 over XDM 9:

A faster pistol compared to XDM 9 (Trigger Reset, Sights easier and faster to aquire target, more ballanced, Lower bore access. After shooting the GLock, the XDM 9 just felt a little big and clumsy)

Accessories: It’s the Ruger 10/22 (22lr carbine) and 1911 (45 acp) of polymer pistols. Found this to be a plus as I can costomize my gun to my taste without a gunsmith.

Thousands of rounds and no FTE or FTF.
    No frills, no hype.

    Cons:
    Plastic sights and trigger
    Slide release lever
Round in chamber indicator leaves something to be desired

    Both equally accurate.

If this is going to be your first pistol, I’ll have to recommend the XD/XDM line. This is due to the added grip satey, a clearly visible cocked indicator and Round in chamber indicator. With the Glock, you have to turn it over and look at the trigger to see if it is in the cocked position and at the ejector to see if there is a round in the chamber.

Jesse James, I don’t know if you will see this before purchasing your pistol, but you can’t go wrong with either. If you are planning on concealed carry, I would get the glock as it is much lighter (over half a pound) and thus will be more comfortable to carry over long periods of time. In stock trim, the xd-m holds one more round (big deal).

I carry a glock 23 with it’s factory 13 round mag and a back up 17 round mag. That’s 30 rounds on my person, and what i feel should be adequate for up to 5 bad guys in a critical situation. the xd-m holds 32 rounds compared to my situation, but my glock is much more concealable; it’s .75 inches shorter.

Both are extremely reliable as well. All that said, at least hold both options in the store and whichever feels more comfortable, buy it.

    Jesse,
With either you will not be disappointed. Glad to hear you are going to be a gun owner, and I hope you get good training, please.

At any rate I hope you get or stay active in helping keeping our nation a prosperous, free and strong one by joining in the fight against tyranny, even the ‘soft’ tyranny that’s developing in our country right now.

    @ deprodigy
I like the XDM OVER glock because its safer to carry with a loaded chamber. Also, in night the xdm has 2 ways to check if the chamber is loaded… with out needing to look at it just with yoour finger, dough you should know how you left your gun but if needed, what else, glock its so commun among everyone. Its like owning a ford when you can own a Ferrary.

I know bunch of people are going to bark me about this comment, so please dont! ;) its just my opinion.

I’d take the XDM 40 anyday and twice on sunday. It’s a better weapon and it won’t break if you treat it like a gun and not a hammer. Glocks are nice but let’s face it, EVERYBODY owns a Glock, XDM’s are in a class by themselves.
