Buying an eoTECH
Recently I have been helping a buddy get ready for their first Tactical Rifle match. I am some what a newbie to rifle matches myself but it is always fun to help someone else spend their money!
The match we have been preparing for allows most any style weapon that is legal and most people use military style weapons like the AR15. At the match you will see any thing from an M1, SKS, and some that I don’t recognize. Most people use the AR15 due to the ready availability and reliability of parts. Regardless of platform and preference the main thing is to be comfortable with your weapon.
Most people spend a lot time and money building, practicing, and cleaning their weapon to make it their own. When somebody comes to you and wants to build one like yours it is flattering. When my buddy came to me to ask about the optics I have on mine I was more than obliged to offer advice and counseling. My optics cost more than my initial investment in my weapon and is the case for most gun owners.
On my gun I have L3 Communications EOTech 552 Military / Tactical Holographic Sight
and the eoTech 4x Magnifier with Flip to Side Mount
In recent months I have heard and read reviews of the eoTECH not meeting the demands in the field. For me the setup on my weapon more than meets my needs. The accuracy and reliability are far above any optics for the application I require. Previously I had a Yukon Advanced Optics Sightmark Reflex Sight
The Sightmark is made by Aimpoint, which is known for low cost, did not make it. I couldn’t get the sight to zero. Just when I thought it was “close enough” something would through it off. For about 8 or 9 times the cost the eoTECH is my preferred solution. Price maybe the determining factor for lots of people… But as someone that drives an economy car, lives in the suburbs, and expensive “toys” the eoTECH fit the bill. The clear sight picture, water proof container, easily replaced AA batteries, and true warranty support was easy.
So why do you say warranty? With that high price tag it shouldn’t break? Well if you have ever been around me you know that nothing is unbreakable and rarely goes untested! After only having it a few weeks I had somehow managed to tweak the mount and it wasn’t holding the magnifier correctly. It was clearly my fault. I called the company, Repair & Service at Doreen.Flummerfelt@l-3com.com or by calling (734) 741-8868 x3688. For those of you who have met me know I am persistent too so “no” is never an option. After talking to what ever Far East salesperson I called instead of service (a little trick I learned… “Call sales they don’t say no”) they offered to send a new one out as long as I promised to send it to him because he didn’t believe me. Because I messed up and bought the standard mount and not the Flip-to-Side I ended up being sold on buying a FTS mount. If you buy a magnifier go ahead and jump for the Flip-to-Side. If you don’t like it and are mad at me contact me and we can work something out for my strong mount.
I could go on and on with my rave review of the eoTECH. I recommend to my buddy the 557 with Flip to Side Magnifier Base. The price up front is expensive but ultimately worth it.
What type of optics do you have and what do you think of them?
